- He was sworn in as Chief Minister of Gujarat on 7 October 2001, and held the office until 22 May 2014.
- It was his first elected executive post, and it ran for a little under thirteen years.
Three consecutive terms
- He was sworn in as Prime Minister of India on 26 May 2014, and has been the Member of Parliament for Varanasi since 5 June 2014.
- He was sworn in for a second term in May 2019 and a third on 9 June 2024.
- In September 2014 he used his UN General Assembly address to propose an annual International Day of Yoga. The draft resolution was introduced on 11 December 2014 with 177 co-sponsoring nations, and the day was first observed on 21 June 2015.
What astrologers say — and what we actually compute
His is probably the most publicly discussed chart in India. Plenty gets asserted about it. Here is each popular claim next to what our engine can and cannot verify from the data that actually exists.
A raj yoga — literally a "royal combination" — is one of the most frequently discussed features of his chart in public astrology commentary, and "Modi raj yoga kundli" is a genuinely common search.
We cannot confirm one, and neither can anyone else without a verified birth minute. Nearly every classical raj yoga is defined by house lords — which planet rules the 9th, which rules the 10th, and whether they connect. Houses require the exact minute of birth. His is not verified.
What we can state from the date alone: Mercury is exalted and Mars is in its own sign. Those are real strengths in the chart, and they are sign-level facts. Calling them a named raj yoga is a step the data does not support.
Which mahadasha he is currently in is asserted confidently and often — Rahu being the most common answer in circulation.
It is not determinable. We ran his chart at ten-minute intervals across all 24 hours of 17 September 1950. The mahadasha running today comes out as Rahu, Mars or Moon depending on which minute you pick.
The reason is mechanical: the Moon moves about 13° a day and a nakshatra is only 13°20' wide, so the Moon's position within its nakshatra — the thing that sets the whole dasha clock — sweeps almost the entire span in one day. His first mahadasha's end date lands anywhere between 1950 and 1969 across that sweep. So: order yes, dates no.
Election-year prediction queries are among the most searched things attached to his name — 2024, 2026, 2029. Plenty of sites answer them.
Nothing. We do not publish election predictions, for him or for anyone. That is a fixed editorial rule here, not a judgement about him.
Two reasons. First, an election is a public event with millions of participants; a single person's birth chart is not a mechanism for forecasting one. Second, and more simply, the timing tools you would need — dashas with real dates — are unavailable in this chart, as shown directly above.
Two things in this chart that are genuinely unusual
🔭 Five grahas, one corner of the wheel
- Venus at Leo 15°41', Saturn at Leo 29°39', the Sun at Virgo 0°35', Mercury at Virgo 0°47' and Ketu at Virgo 5°13'. That is five of nine grahas inside a 19.5° arc.
- Saturn, Sun and Mercury span just 1.13° between them. The Sun and Mercury are 0.19° apart — closer together than the width of the Moon in the sky.
- A pile-up like this is called a stellium. It concentrates a chart: several departments of life running through the same narrow slice of sky instead of spread across it.
- Two casualties come with the crowding. Mercury and Saturn both sit close enough to the Sun to be combust — traditionally read as being outshone by it.
🔭 Also worth noting: four of those five — Saturn, Sun, Mercury and Ketu — share one nakshatra, Uttara Phalguni, which is ruled by the Sun. Four grahas in one lunar mansion is uncommon.
🌗 A debilitated Moon with its own landlord next door
- His Moon is in Scorpio, the sign where the Moon is traditionally at its weakest — its debilitation sign. That holds at every minute of the day, so it needs no birth time.
- But Scorpio is ruled by Mars — and Mars is sitting right there in Scorpio too, in its own sign, at 0°55'.
- Classical texts have a name for that arrangement: neecha bhanga, roughly "cancellation of debilitation". The idea is that a weakened planet sitting with a strong sign-ruler is partly propped back up.
- Read plainly: the chart's most obviously weak placement is also the one with a strong neighbour holding the lease on the same sign.
🔭 The honest caveat: how much neecha bhanga actually rescues is argued about by astrologers, and the strictest versions of the rule also involve houses — which we do not have. What is not arguable is the raw configuration: debilitated Moon, own-sign Mars, same sign.

☿EXALTED · RETRO · COMBUST
The best-placed planet in the chart — and the most interfered with
- Mercury runs speech, analysis and organisation. Virgo is its exaltation sign, the one place it works at full strength. His sits there, at 0°47'.
- It is also retrograde, and combust — just 0.19° from the Sun, a smaller gap than the width of the full Moon in the sky. Classical texts read a combust planet as outshone: peak equipment, swamped conditions.
- Exalted and burnt in the same breath is genuinely unusual, and it is the single most distinctive thing our engine returns for this chart.

The discipline planet, standing on the last degree of its sign
- Saturn governs patience, structure and long unglamorous work. His sits at Leo 29°39' — about twenty-one arcminutes from crossing into Virgo. In practice it is on the doorstep of the next sign.
- It is combust as well, 0.94° from the Sun. Two of his nine grahas are burnt, and both of them are in this cluster.
- Its nakshatra has already changed even though its sign has not: Saturn is in Uttara Phalguni, the same lunar mansion as the Sun, Mercury and Ketu. Sign boundaries and nakshatra boundaries do not line up.
☾DEBILITATED
The one weak placement — with a caveat sitting right beside it
- The Moon runs instinct, mood and the mind. Scorpio is its debilitation sign, the single spot where it is traditionally weakest. His is at Scorpio 8°48'.
- This one needs no birth time at all. We ran his chart at ten-minute intervals across the whole day, and the Moon was in Scorpio and debilitated at every single one of those 144 charts.
- What sits next to it changes the reading: Mars, which rules Scorpio, is in the same sign in its own house — the arrangement classical texts call neecha bhanga.
- Its nakshatra is Anuradha for 92.2% of that day, crossing over from Vishakha at about 01:53 IST — and the nakshatra is what fixes his dasha order.
♂OWN SIGN
The one planet in this chart that owns the room it is standing in
- Mars governs drive, stamina and confrontation. Scorpio is one of the two signs it rules, so here it needs nobody's permission. His sits at Scorpio 0°55', barely inside the door.
- It is the only graha in the chart on home ground — and it happens to be sharing that sign with the chart's only debilitated planet.
- Its nakshatra is still Vishakha: Mars crosses into Scorpio well before it would cross into Anuradha. Another place where the two boundary systems disagree.

Why "which sign" actually matters
Every planet has signs where it is comfortable and signs where it struggles. Same planet, different room, different output.
- Exalted (best spot) — the one sign where a planet performs at its absolute peak.
- Home ground (own sign) — the planet owns the place. Full strength, no permission needed.
- Debilitated (weakest spot) — it is working with the handbrake on.
- Everywhere else (neutral) — a guest. Functional, not special.
Combustion — when a planet gets too close to the Sun
Sit a planet close enough to the Sun and Vedic astrology calls it combust — astangata, "burnt". The traditional reading is that the planet's own agenda gets drowned out by the Sun's.
It matters here more than on most pages, because his chart has two of them, and they are extremely close in.
Which produces the chart's central tension: Mercury is in the one sign where it is strongest, and simultaneously burnt and retrograde. Peak equipment, difficult conditions, same square of sky.
Dashas — why timing is usually the whole game
This is the bit most people have never heard of, and it is normally the most useful.
Planets do not all act at once. They take turns running a life, for years at a stretch, in a fixed order that the Moon's position sets at birth. Vedic astrology calls a planet's turn a dasha, and the lifetime sequence is the Vimshottari dasha.
Two separate things come out of that: the order the lords run in, and the dates each turn starts and ends. The order comes from which nakshatra the Moon is in. The dates come from where inside that nakshatra it sits. Those are not equally knowable.

Why this page has no dasha dates on it
Most celebrity astrology pages will hand you a tidy dasha table for him, with years. We ran the numbers, and here is what we found instead.
We computed his chart at ten-minute intervals across all 24 hours of 17 September 1950 — 144 charts — and watched what moved.
What moved: the Moon's nakshatra. It crosses from Vishakha into Anuradha at about 01:53 IST. So Anuradha holds for 92.2% of the day — and every circulating birth time for him falls on the Anuradha side, which is why the order in Lesson 05 starts with Saturn.
What fell apart completely: the dates. Across that sweep, the end of his first mahadasha lands anywhere from 1950 to 1969 — an 18.9-year spread. And the mahadasha running today comes out as Rahu, Mars or Moon depending on the minute you choose.
That is the whole reason. The Moon travels roughly 13° per day and a nakshatra is 13°20' wide, so in one day the Moon sweeps nearly a full nakshatra — and its position inside that nakshatra is precisely what sets the dasha clock. Without a verified minute, the order is real and the dates are invented. We publish the first and refuse the second.
What we genuinely cannot tell you
Here is where most celebrity astrology sites quietly cheat, and we will not.
A chart has two halves. Which sign each planet is in only needs the date, so everything above is solid. And the houses, which need the exact minute of birth, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours.
